Akita Philosophy Seminar

The 1st Akita Philosophy Seminar

December 10-11, 2022
Akita University

We are pleased to announce the first edition of the Akita Philosophy Seminar (APS), to be held on December 10-11 2022 at Akita University in northern Japan. The aim of the seminar is to create a platform for discussion – among philosophers, across disciplines, and with society at large; a locus where we can exchange ideas, learn from each other, and reflect on what makes us who we are. The theme of this first seminar will be “What makes us human? 人間の条件”.

In this day and age, when climate change, pandemics or conflicts are already starting to affect not only the ways of nature, but also the very way we as human beings are in this world, how do we deal with them? How can we, and how do we, think about the value of human life? And what does it mean to be human, in the end?
We do not have the answers to all these questions. After all, does anybody? But we feel the obligation to reflect on them – to doubt and challenge perspectives, to propose alternatives, to suggest new approaches, to break the boxes and think outside of them. And we would like to invite you to join us.

This first edition of the seminar will be a pilot (experimental) one, on an invitation-only basis. The seminar will be held in-person, and there will be no live streaming. However, from next year on, we plan to launch a call for presentations in early spring, so do keep us in mind for the next iterations.
